Wow! Great post! We have a 5-month old baby daughter and she's been co-sleeping since we decided it would make nighttime parenting easier 4 days after she was born. We have never felt even SLIGHTLY that we were putting her at risk by sleeping in the same bed.

We don't do drugs, or go to bed drunk. I don't drink, and on the nights hubby has 2-3 beers he sleeps in the next room. We want our baby to succeed, we don't do things that would have an increased risk to her or her health, or anything like that. Great post.

The schedule on this page WAS the one we were following, in general. My D.O. spread them out a little further, but we didn't really put it in writing. There's really no medical reason for doing them at any specific time or in any specific order.

As a note, however; after doing more reading, we've stopped vaxes altogether. My fourth daughter had 2-3 in her first six months of life, and we haven't been back since. She won't be getting any more. I am thankful my other three children are safe and healthy after I allowed them to be vaxed. That being said, if I were to continue, it would definitely be on a very VERY spread out schedule; probably taking 4-5 years to complete them all, and without a doubt I would order the MMR separate from Merck.

Good luck!

Sure, as long as "practical" isn't neglectful (i.e., leaving baby to cry - that's never practical) then you're right. If a parent is unable to tend to baby's needs, then that parent needs to rethink their priorities. It's never impossible to hold a baby, safely co-sleep, and ensure baby isn't neglected by being left alone to cry in need of her mother. But just because you didn't co-sleep doesn't make you a "bad" parent either! It's what works for each family, without crossing the line into abuse and neglect (crying it out, spanking, etc.).

I'm sorry, but "Our Babies, Ourselves" has many ideas and concepts that are not approved by the AAP and the AAFP. As a mother of a 20 year old Stanford student who is happy and well adjusted and who was not a co-sleeper, breast fed on demand, or held at all times, I have to say that the ideas espoused by this book are not useful for most parents and can make many feel guilty for dealing with their child's issues in a practical fashion. One can be a good parent and have a happy child without conforming to ideas that work in theory and not in practice.
